February 2nd.. Yemanja, the goddess of the sea

Every February 2, on the day of Yemanjá, dozens of people gather at the Uruguayan beaches in order to present their offerings in honor of the Queen of the Sea. The offerings are placed in a wooden or foamed plastic boat, and they are varied: among other things, food, drinks, perfumes, images, letters, lit candles, shells.

On the beach, paes and maes dressed in their typical clothing, lead the rite; and while the drums play, the worshipers dance.

All this is carried out in the hope that Yemanjá provide her worshipers with love, health, work, and a prosperous year.
